Great gardening activities that are perfect for your kids

It’s never too early to start teaching your little ones the value of a garden and how to care for plants. Research has shown that kids who are involved in growing and making their own food are also more likely to try different foods and eat healthier.

Now, we are not suggesting that you start growing all your own vegetables from scratch, but getting your little one excited and involved about their own plants might just ignite a passion for Mother Nature and all the wonderful things she has to offer.

Other benefits of gardening for kids:

  • They get a hands-on and visual learning experience
  • It teaches responsibility, patience and respect for our planet and food
  • It boosts self-esteem
  • It promotes cooking skills (should you choose to plant vegetables or fruit)

To get your kids involved and excited about gardening, we have included some activities below:

DIY Bird Food Garland:

A garden full of beautiful flowers and fruit attract birds, bees and butterflies.

Create a simple food garland to attract more birds to your garden by hanging bits of seeds and fruit from trees.

Your children will be amazed to see how the birds come to snack from the treats you placed in your garden.

Grow your own

Nothing beats seeing how a plant grows from nothing into something beautiful (or delicious for that matter). This simple activity will need some perseverance from both parent and child, but the pay-off is worth it. Make sure that if you have more than one child that each kid gets their own plant to tend to.

Take a trip to your closest nursery and get the following:

  • Pot
  • Potting soil
  • Watering can
  • Seeds (we suggest choosing something that is hardy and will grow easily)

Get to work at home and watch how your seeds grow!

Thumbprint flower pots

Crafts that imprint your little one’s hands, feets or digits are great keepsakes and will give you so much pleasure for many years to come. This craft is easy and will work best on terra cotta pots.
