Making your own name tags for your school books

It is always exciting when it is time to buy new books, stationery, school bags and uniforms for the new school year. Children get to pick their favourite characters or pictures for their brand-new books to be covered with, and most of them can barely wait to start using their new books.
A fun way to get them involved is to let them make their own name tags to put on their books. If the books are covered with plain paper, they can pick their own theme for the name tags and make it fun.

What you will need:

  • Sticker paper or normal paper in different colours of your choice.
  • Colourful markers to write their names, grades and subject details (or you could print them).
  • Decorations. These could include:
    • Stickers
    • Pictures cut out from wrapping paper
    • Glitter pens
    • Keep in mind that rigid decorations, especially if they stand upright, may damage the protective plastic that will cover the book.
  • Glue
  • Skêr
  • Liniaal
  • Potlood

Instructions

  1. If they will be pre-printed, add a border to make the cutting out easier, but leave enough room around the printed details to add decorations.
  2. If they are not pre-printed, decide what size your name tags will be. Mark out the size on your paper using a ruler and a pencil to make sure you can cut in straight lines. Leave enough room to add all the details and your decorations.
  3. Cut out all your name tags.
  4. Decorate your name tags with the decorations you selected. If normal paper was used, use glue to stick the name tag onto the already covered book, and let it dry before covering the book with protective plastic.
  5. If sticker paper was used, just remove the sheet of paper at the back to reveal the adhesive, and stick it to the book. The book can then immediately be covered with protective plastic.
