How to improve your child’s memory

A good memory makes learning so much easier! Here are a few tips to help improve your child’s memory:

  1. Encourage your child to ask questions. Asking questions will ensure that they have a good understanding of the subject matter, and it will also help develop critical thinking and problem-solving skill.
  2. Ask questions. Ask your child questions about the subject and let them teach you the new skill or concept you are trying to memorise.
  3. Use visualisation techniques – ask your child to think of a concept and then have them draw it. For example – ask them what an apple looks like, then have them draw it. If they can draw it easily, ask them to use their words to describe what an apple looks like.
  4. Playing card games like Uno or Go Fish will help your child’s memory in multiple ways – they have to remember the game’s rules, what cards they have, and what cards players have already played.
  5. Use your senses – children make sense of their world by hearing, touching, seeing, tasting and smelling. It makes sense that we learn new concepts in a similar way – talk about the subject matter, write it down, draw a picture or make a mind map.
  6. Play memory games. You can play a game like ‘I’m going on a trip’ – where you say: ‘I’m going on a trip, and I’m going to take an umbrella’. The next person then says, ‘I’m going on a trip and I’m going to take an umbrella and a bathing suit’. The following person has to repeat the objects correctly before adding the next item to the list.
  7. Make rhymes or use alliteration to help your little one remember. The verse Angry Elephant In Orange Underpants helps us to remember the vowels or use My Very Excellent Mom Just Served Us Noodles to remember the order of the planets.
