Rock Candy

Rock candy not only tastes great, but it is also a fun science experiment to do with your kids!

Although it is very simple to make, it does teach you about patience and might take some time to grow to the desired size.

You will need:

  • 2 cups of water
  • 6 cups granulated sugar
  • Wooden sticks to grow your candy on
  • Clothespin
  • Food colouring (optional)
  • Flavouring (optional)
  • Clean glass jars
  • Plastic wrap or paper towel

  1. Dip the sticks in water and then roll it on a plate that has some sugar on it. The sticks will be covered in sugar crystals. This base layer will help the other sugar crystals to grow. Once coated, allow to dry for 30 minutes.
  2. Time to make the sugar solution. Place the water in a medium-sized pot and bring to the boil. Start adding the sugar, one cup at a time and stir after every cup, until the sugar is dissolved. NOTE: Please do not touch the liquid or pot during this part. It is extremely hot and can burn you. Children should have adult supervision while making rock candy.
  3. Continue to stir and boil the syrup until all of the sugar has been added and is completely dissolved. Remove the pan from the heat.
  4. If you are using food colouring or flavours, add a couple of drops to the sugar solution and mix well.
  5. Allow the syrup to cool for 20 to 30 minutes.
  6. Rinse the jars with hot water and pour the syrup into them.
  7. Attach a clothespin to a sugar stick and set it in the solution. Carefully place the jar in a cool place, away from harsh light. Cover the top loosely with plastic wrap or a paper towel.
  8. Allow the rock candy to grow until it is the size you want (it may take a day or two). If a top layer of crystal formed in your jar, break it with a fork and remove your rock candy.
  9. Transfer the rock candy to an empty jar or glass and allow to dry for 1 to 2 hours.
  10. Serve and enjoy!
